This Sandman LBV port is an absolute delight and perfect for the festive season (or anytime one could argue!). It is a very deep ruby in colour and has an intense aromatic nose. On the nose, you initially get plenty of rich fruit notes (plum and blackberry mainly). These are nicely supported by a complex array of aromas such as spicy black pepper, tobacco, cedar, cocoa and even hints of mint. When drinking, you get a full-bodied port that has good structure, and delivers plump fruit and spice flavours. This LBV port has a long and perfectly balanced finish.
It is also unfiltered which makes it suitable for vegans – a lot of ports aren’t suitable if they have been wood aged or filtered. Due to the age of ports, it will take time for the move to vegan fining agents to affect ports that can be bought. A port maker we spoke to had just started using pea gelatine, but his port won’t be ready for another 6 years!
