A well made Rioja from Montecillo that has all the hallmarks of a classic Rioja. It’s a complex wine with flavours of ripe black fruits, cherry, spice and touches of caramel and brioche. They make it using 70% Tempranillo and 30% Graciano, which are fermented separately in steel tanks. After this, they rack the wines into a combination of new French oak and ‘mixed wood’ barrels – French staves interspersed with American – before blending and ageing for 6 months in these barrels followed by 18 months in the bottle prior to release.
The resulting wine is powerful, incredibly elegant yet still very fresh. Overall, this is an outstanding wine. Enjoy it now or lay it down for a few years more.
